The flea has approximately 40,000 species, and one of these is the bed bug.
There are two species of bed bugs. Bed bugs are found worldwide, but the tropical bed bug is found only in tropical regions around the world.
Bed bugs are parasites and have been known to exist even in ancient China and ancient Greece where they have been documented in literature as harmful. However, there is reason to believe that they existed even in prehistoric times when man first settled into caves occupied by bats which were the original host of the bed bug.
The bed bug is usually about 5 mm length, red-brown in color and difficult to identify. Bedbugs are external parasites that suck blood from their host as a source of nourishment.
During the day, bed bugs hide in cracks and leave during the night in order to find nourishment. The bite of the bed bug is usually painless and sometimes only a slight temporary swelling appears where the sting occurred or tiny blood stains on the bed linen are visible.
No known diseases are transmitted by bed bugs but they can deliver a harsh sting and some people may develop an allergic reaction which is caused by the saliva being injected into the host.
BED BUGS CONTROL STRATEGIES
PEST CONTROL OPERATIONS ARE COMPLEMENTARY TREATMENTS TO PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF BED BUGS.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES THAT ARE RECOMMENDED:
- Use a powerful vacuum in all regions of the bed, carpets, sofas, etc.
- It is important to spray insecticides in advance on beds and their surroundings.
- Splashing pesticides into holes and in hard to reach places in order to wash out and eliminate these bugs can be very effective.
- For younger pests it is important to spray pesticides that contain preparations combined with growth regulators.
- After the fleas control measures have been completed be sure to wash all the sheets thoroughly in the infected rooms and in water that has a temperature that is at least 60 degrees.
